Washington Prescribed Fire Council

2011-2023

Established in 2011, the Washington Prescribed Fire Council (WPFC) is a coalition of stakeholders and practitioners who work together to increase the safe and effective use of prescribed fire in Washington.

In 2013, WRCD became the Council’s fiscal sponsor and later hired a staff member to coordinate WPFC activities. As of 2023, WPFC has attained their own 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. WRCD is no longer the fiscal sponsor for WPFC but remains involved as a Steering Committee member to stay engaged in state and federal policy discussions and support community priorities in prescribed fire implementation.

Since its inception, WPFC has identified both barriers and solutions to prescribed fire implementation. Its push to put these solutions into action has led to several key outcomes including the update of Washington’s Smoke Management Plan, the development of the Washington Certified Prescribed Burn Manager program, the Prescribed Fire Training Exchange Program (TREX), the coordination of messaging and outreach around prescribed fire, and more.
